Як з'явилася перша косметика

How the first cosmetics appeared

A woman always remains a woman. Even in ancient times, the fair sex paid great attention to their appearance. And in many countries, men also sinned by this - rubbing perfumes and rejuvenating ointments was considered a good tone.

Egyptian beauty

Presumably, the ancient Egyptians were the first to use cosmetic procedures. It was on the territory of Egypt that a burial was found, where, among other objects, there were vessels with ointments, which were surprisingly well preserved over the centuries. It is believed that the first cosmetic recipes are at least five thousand years old.

In one of these burials, the first collection of beauty tips was discovered - an ancient papyrus about two meters long.

Frankincense, crushed fresh and dried plants, nuts and even onions with garlic were used to create cosmetics at that time.

Decorative cosmetics served as facial whites, rouge, lipstick and ash to line the eyes. A wide variety of fuels were used to obtain ash - from wood to animal bones. However, a fact proven by modern studies of ancient Egyptian mummies remains interesting: the paint used to line the eyes by the ancient Egyptians has bactericidal properties.

Perhaps the "arrows", which later became deeply and firmly in fashion, were part of the hygienic procedures of the time, which prevented eye infections.
The eyelids were painted with grated malachite, green copper, ore and sulphurous lead.
Much attention was paid to the care of one's body, and not only to its decoration. Massages with healing oils, peeling with ground pearl shells, and of course, perfumes - for the body, hair, feet, aromatic baths and chokers soaked in essential oils, attached to the crowns of the head... Ancient beauties were known for perfumery.

It is said that Cleopatra even impregnated the sails of her ship with aromatic mixtures to make the journey more pleasant.

Because of the hot climate, many ceremonial events in Egypt were held at night, when the suffocation receded. You can't see makeup in the dark - that's right. But the enterprising beauties were not lost here either - phosphorous-based make-up paints, the thinnest threads with pearls, sparkling in the moonlight, translucent clothes with nets made of gold and silver threads appeared in the process - all this created a magical effect.

Killing beauty

Originating in the Ancient East, the art of beauty began its centuries-long journey around the world and captivated it. Attitudes to cosmetics in different countries at different times could be diametrically opposed, from a general fascination (both among women and men) to a complete ban by the church (medieval Europe).

Some types of cosmetics were banned already in the middle of the 20th century due to the content of substances dangerous to health. Lead, arsenic, mercury, belladonna (belladonna) extract, fat and blood of animals, radium - just what people used to lubricate their faces, hair and even teeth to create an effect of indescribable beauty!

The same period, when radioactivity was already discovered, and the harm from it was not yet (20s - 40s), radium was added to all cosmetics, creating powder with the effect of radiance and toothpaste that gives a dazzling smile.

Oil is oily

However, the most reliable and popular means of health body care and hair was and still is oil. Olive, almond, argan, shea, jojoba, all types of citrus fruits - you can't list everything.
